제 21 품 잡품(雜品)

만일 사소한 행복을 희생함으로써, 더 큰 행복을 얻
을 수 있다는 것을 안다면, 지혜로운 사람은, 더 큰
행복에 대한 전망을 가지고, 사소한 행복을 희생시
켜야 합니다.
若棄於小樂,得見於大樂。智者棄小樂,當見於大樂。
若捨棄小樂會獲得大樂,預見大樂的智者應當捨棄小樂。
Seeing that abandoning the small happiness one could obtain
large happiness, a wise one, considering the large happiness
should abandon the small happiness.
If he sees that by sacrificing a slight happiness he can obtain
a greater happiness, then a wise man should sacrifice the
lesser happiness with a view to the greater happiness.

다른 사람들에게 괴로움을 주는 것에서, 즐거움을
취하는 사람은, 증오의 그물에 갇혀서. 증오로부터
자유를 얻지 못합니다.
施與他人苦, 求自己樂;彼瞋繫縛,怨憎不解脫。
求自己的快樂,而令他人痛苦者,他受到怨恨束縛,而無法解脫
怨恨。
He wants his own happiness by imposing suffering on others.
Full of hatred, he will not be released from hatred.
He who seeks his own happiness by inflicting suffering on
others, does not reach freedom from hatred, caught as he is
in the toils of hatred.

자신이 하여야 할 일은 하지 않고, 자신이 하지 말
아야 할 일은 하는, 그런 교만하고 사려 깊지 못한
사람에게는, 생각의 유입이 점점 늘어만 갑니다.
應作而不作,不應作而作,傲慢放逸者,彼之漏增長。
若人該做的事不做,卻做了不該做的事,又驕慢與自我放縱,他的
煩惱即會增長。
What should be done - is rejected. What should not be done
- that is being done. Taints of those, who are proud and
negligent, surely grow.
What IS their affair is put aside. What is NOT their affair
gets done. The inflow of thoughts in such brazen and
careless people just goes on increasing.

그러나 몸에 대한 수련(修練)을 항상 열심히 수행하
는 사람은, 자신이 하지 말아야 할 일에는 아무런
관심을 두지 않고, 항상 자신이 하여야 할 일을 꾸
준히 하고 있습니다. 이러한 사려 깊고, 안목 있는
사람에게는 생각의 유입이 그치게 됩니다.
常精勤觀身,不作不應作,應作則常作,觀者漏滅盡。
若人常勤修身至念,不做不該做的事,又常做該做的事,及具有正
念與明覺,其煩惱將會止息。(註:該做的事是指勤修戒定慧。)
Those who have very firm and constant mindfulness as to
the body, those do not practice what should not be done,
they are persevering in what should be done. The taints of
those, who are mindful and thoughtful, become extinct.
They whose recollection of the body is always well
established, however, have nothing to do with what is not
their affair, always persevering in what IS their affair. The
inflow of thoughts in such recollected and aware people
simply dies away. 292,

어머니(탐애)와 아버지(교만)와 두 명의 전사(戰士)
왕(영원주의와 허무주의 : 常見과 斷見)과 신하(집
착)들을 죽인 후에, 왕국(감각기관과 감각물체)을 멸
망시키고, 바라문은 마음의 동요 없이 자신의 길을
갑니다.
殺(愛欲)母與(慢)父,殺帝利族二王,(破)王國殺其從臣,
趨向無憂婆羅門。
在殺掉母親(即渴愛)、父親(即我慢)與兩位帝利王(即常見
與斷見)、及摧了國家(即六根與六所緣)和的眾臣(即執
取)之後,婆羅門(即阿羅漢)得以解脫苦。
Having killed mother, father and two warrior kings, having
killed the whole country with its followers, undisturbed
walks the holy man.
After killing mother (desire), father ("I am" conceit) and two
warrior kings, and destroying the kingdom along with its
subjects, the brahmin goes on his way unperturbed.

어머니(탐애)와 아버지(교만)와 두 명의 전사(戰士)
왕(영원주의와 허무주의 : 常見과 斷見)을 죽이고,
다섯 번째 희생자로 호랑이(의심)를 죽인 후에, 바
라문은 마음의 동요 없이 자신의 길을 갑니다.
殺(愛欲)母與(慢)父,殺婆羅門族二王,殺其虎(將)第五
(疑),趨向無憂婆羅門。
在殺掉母親、父親與兩位婆羅門王、及消滅了有疑如虎的五蓋之後 ,
婆羅門(即阿羅漢)得以解脫苦。
Having killed mother, father and two Brahmin kings, having
killed the
tiger as fifth, undisturbed walks the Brahmin.
After killing mother, father and two priestly kings, and killed
a tiger as his fifth victim, the brahmin goes on his way
unperturbed.

밤이나 낮이나 항상 부처님을 생각하는, 부처님의
제자들은, 항상 잘 깨어 있습니다.
喬達摩弟子,常善自醒覺,無論晝與夜,彼常念佛陀。
喬達摩的弟子們心常醒覺,不論晝夜皆常念佛(的功德)。
The disciples of Gotama, whose mindfulness is day and night
constantly directed to the Buddha, those are always well
awakened.
A good awakening have ever Gotama's disciples, whose
recollection is always established, day and night on the
Buddha.

밤이나 낮이나 항상 가르침[법]을 생각하는, 부처님
의 제자들은, 항상 잘 깨어 있습니다.
喬達摩弟子,常善自醒覺,無論晝與夜,彼常念達摩。
喬達摩的弟子們心常醒覺,不論晝夜皆常念法(的功德)。
The disciples of Gotama, whose mindfulness is day and night
constantly directed to the Dharma, those are always well
awakened.
A good awakening have ever Gotama's disciples, whose
recollection is always established, day and night on the
Teaching.

밤이나 낮이나 항상 승단을 생각하는, 부처님의 제
자들은, 항상 잘 깨어 있습니다.
喬達摩弟子,常善自醒覺,無論晝與夜,彼常念僧伽。
喬達摩的弟子們心常醒覺,不論晝夜皆常念身(不淨)。
The disciples of Gotama, whose mindfulness is day and night
constantly directed to the Sangha, those are always well
awakened.
A good awakening have ever Gotama's disciples, whose
recollection is always established, day and night on the
Order.

밤이나 낮이나 항상 몸을 생각하는, 부처님의 제자
들은, 항상 잘 깨어 있습니다.
喬達摩弟子,常善自醒覺,無論晝與夜,彼常念於身。
喬達摩的弟子們心常醒覺,不論晝夜皆常念僧(的功德)。
The disciples of Gotama, whose mindfulness is day and night
constantly directed to the body, those are always well
awakened.
A good awakening have ever Gotama's disciples, whose
recollection is always established, day and night on the body.

밤이나 낮이나 항상 비폭력[불살생]에 전념하는, 부
처님의 제자들은, 항상 잘 깨어 있습니다.
喬達摩弟子,常善自醒覺,無論晝與夜,常樂不殺生。
喬達摩的弟子們心常醒覺,不論晝夜皆樂於悲(即無害)。
The disciples of Gotama, whose mind is day and night
devoted to non-violence, those are always well awakened.
A good awakening have ever Gotama's disciples, whose
minds are always rejoicing in non violence.

밤이나 낮이나 항상 명상[선정]에 전념하는, 부처님
의 제자들은, 항상 잘 깨어 있습니다.
喬達摩弟子,常善自醒覺,無論晝與夜,心常樂禪定。
喬達摩的弟子們心常醒覺,不論晝夜皆樂於培育(對一切眾生的慈
愛)。
The disciples of Gotama, whose mind is day and night
devoted to meditation, those are always well awakened.
A good awakening have ever Gotama's disciples, whose
minds are always rejoicing in the practice of meditation.

출가생활은 택하기도 어렵고, 거기서 만족감을 찾기
도 어렵습니다. 그러나 재가생활도 어렵긴 마찬가지
이고, 자신과 (성격이) 같지 않은 사람들과 함께 사
는 것도 고통스럽습니다. 윤회를 벗어나지 못한 사
람들에게는 괴로움이 항상 따르게 됩니다. 그러므로
윤회에서 벗어나, 괴로움이 따르지 않도록 하십시오.
出家愛樂難。在家生活難。非儔共住苦。(輪迴)往來苦。故不應
往來,隨從於痛苦。
比丘是很難得的;過後又樂於比丘的修行更是難得。艱難的俗
家生活是痛苦的;與性格不同之人相處是痛苦的。生死輪迴中的旅
人不斷遭受痛苦,因此別作生死輪迴的旅人,別作不斷受苦的人。
It is difficult to become a monk. It is difficult to enjoy it.
Unpleasant and difficult to endure is a life of a householder.
Painful is association with unequal. Wanderer in the round of
rebirth is always followed by suffering. Therefore, do not be
a wanderer and do not be followed by suffering.
It is hard to take up a life of renunciation, and difficult to find
satisfaction in it, but it is also difficult to live in bad
households, and painful to live with people unlike oneself,
when one is forever tangled in suffering and restless.
Therefore don't always be restless, and don't let yourself be
tangled in suffering.

어떤 사람이 믿음을 가지고 있고, 덕을 부여 받았으
며, 명예와 부를 소유하고 있다면, 그가 사는 곳이
어디든지, 그는 그 곳에서 존경을 받을 것입니다.
正信而具戒,得譽及財者,彼至於何處,處處受尊敬。
他信戒具足,有聲譽財富,無論去何處,皆備受尊敬。
With trust, possessed of virtue, endowed with fame and
wealth - to whatever region does he resort, he is respected
everywhere.
When a man has faith, is endowed with virtue, and
possessed of fame and wealth, wherever he lives he will be
honoured.

선(善)한 사람들은, 히말라야 산처럼, 먼 곳에서도
눈에 띄지만, 악한 사람들은, 어둠 속으로 쏜 화살
처럼, 가까이 있어도 보이지 않습니다.
善名揚遠方,高顯如雲山。惡者如夜射,雖近不能見。
善人有如喜瑪拉雅山,雖在遠處亦明顯可見;惡人有如在黑夜裡放
射的箭,雖在近處亦看不到。
The good ones shine from afar, like a snowy mountain. The
bad ones are unseen, like arrows shot at night.
The good are conspicuous a long way off, like a Himalayan
peak, while the bad are just not noticed, like arrows shot
into the dark.

혼자 앉아있고, 혼자 자며, 혼자 떠돌고, 혼자서 열
심히 수련(修練)하는 사람은, 숲 속에서 사는 것에
서 즐거움을 취합니다.
獨坐與獨臥,獨行而不倦,彼獨自調御,喜樂於林中。
他獨坐、獨處、獨行地勤修、獨自克服自己、樂於住在林中。
Sitting alone, sleeping in solitude, wandering alone and
active, alone subduing oneself - such a one would take
delight in living in forests.
Living alone, sleeping alone, travelling alone, and resolute,
alone and
self disciplined, should take pleasure in living in the forest.
